When playing SA-CD (Super Audio Compact Disc), the player reads stereo tracks stored in 1-Bit DSD coding. It uses 2.8224MHz sampling and has a frequency response of 2Hz - 50kHz (+0, -3dB), a dynamic range of 114 dB, and a Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) of 0.0009%. However, when playing CD-DA (Compact Disc Digital Audio), it reads audio tracks in 16-Bit Linear PCM coding. It uses 44.1kHz sampling and has a frequency response of 2Hz - 20kHz, a dynamic range of 100dB, and a Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) of 0. 0.002%.
The SA-7S1 features a premium digital-to-analog High Accuracy NPC SM5866A5 D/A Converter. It also comes with a full balanced Analog Audio Stage with HDAM SA2. The player also has several outputs for a variety of connections. These include an Analog L&R Out, a Digital Optical Out, and a Digital Coaxial Out. However, it does not have an Analog 5.1 channel out or a headphone out.

Which brings us finally to the question of value. The SA-7S1 is a beautifully built and presented player. It’s versatile and it’s operationally really well sorted. It delivers a presence and solid stability from both SACD and CD that no player at its price can match. If its powerful performance matches your tastes or your system, you’ll do well to find a player you prefer (certainly one that plays SACD too) much short of twice its price. First impressions don’t count, at least when it comes to Amaranth’s new range-topper. Take a quick listen to the SA-7S1 SACD/CD player, and it comes across as overly polite. The player initially seems understated, lacking the punch, bass power and impressive dynamics that you’d expect for this kind of money – which is five grand, remember. Truth be told, despite Marantz’s legendary status as a hi-fi pioneer, I never considered them a “true” audiophile brand. Every product I heard from them up until the SA-1 CD/SACD player left me a little ambivalent—definitely good stuff, and mostly good value, but not nearly what I’d call state of the art. Snobbish?
