As always, your first thought should not be what cell phone, but how – and to what – you going to use your new cell phone. When cell phones first arrived they were heavy, complicated, batteries where a joke and the cell phones weren’t useful for much more than just phoning. Today we send text messages, use them as cameras, calendars, e-mail clients, mp3 players and much, much more.
So today most of the cell phones are good enough for most purposes, but they vary in features. Run time on battery is of course important – today we want lighter and slimmer phones and that affects battery size. Most phones today have a variety of connection possibilities, often wireless. Over a Bluetooth connection you can send sound to headphones, hands-free units or connect to computers to read mail, synchronize your calendar and much, much more.
Cell phones could be divided into four main segments:
• The super small/light made to be carried with you at all time. They come in all qualities and looks, from designer versions in all colors to basic black little boxes. As they are extremely compact, the camera lens of the cell phone got a camera function that, in most cases, is of simpler quality. They can sometimes be difficult for people with larger fingers to operate as the keys are small too – especially when text messaging.
• The all-in-one. Here you find the models that care for a great deal of need for “electronic entertainment devices”. Those are of course talented cell phones that also have a lot of extra features for easy text messaging, a high resolution chip for the very best picture quality in the camera part and often a good mp3 player. In this segment usability is very important, as the cell phones can contain so many functions, they tend to be somewhat complicated to use. Test the model you are interested in carefully in this aspect. It is a good idea to go for models with lots of mega pixels and good lens quality if you intend to use the camera part a lot. If you highlight the mp3 player check what software is used and that it is compatible with the rest of your equipment.
• Internet and/or gaming cell phones are usually fitted with a larger screen, often widescreen. They sometimes have controls and buttons especially suited for gaming. Compare screens carefully, a high resolution screen with good contrast is essential.
• PDA phones for business people. They combine a phone with a PDA – and often camera and mp3 playing possibility. With a large screen and lots of functions they often tend to be on the larger and heavier side. In this segment focus lies on using it as a business machine, since you can read mail, surf the internet and read spreadsheets and word processors’ documents.
So when you have decided how and to what you are going to use your cell phone, read tests of the interesting models. Test how they work ergonomically: if you send a lot of text messages it is important that the phone is easy to use.
TIP:
A car-mounted hands-free set doesn’t only make using your cell phone while driving safer. Used together with a charger will keep the phone battery charged all times.
