  1. Nikon D3 and D700 vs Canon 5D

    Reviewer: Ken Rockwell

Fast answer: Want to shoot in low light, or shoot moving things and action? Get the Nikon D3 . Want a camera for portraits? Get the Nikon D700 . Want the highest technical quality for landscapes, even if the camera is more difficult to set and use? Get the Canon 5D . You could spend hours fretting over meaningless specs, forums and conjecture, but hopefully my personal experience over the past couple of years after buying these for myself can make this clear. ... All of you photographers out there who are serious about your images better start saving up your pennies for Nikon's new DSLR, the D3. While all the previous digital SLR offerings from Nikon have been in the DX format (23.6 x 15.8mm sized sensor) many a photographer has been waiting patiently for Nikon to introduce a full frame digital camera. Nikon has finally done so with the D3 body and its FX format sensor. Read more

  3. Nikon D3 Review

    26 February 2008

The D3 is Nikon's flagship FX digital camera, if only because it's Nikon's sole FX digital camera. But the D3 justifies its standing in the Nikon ranks on much more than mere exclusivity. Unparalleled ISO performance, a 9 fps full resolution shooting rate, exceptional color and image quality, a superb monitor, robust construction, outstanding build quality and a full frame sensor offering wide angle and depth of field lens performance like a 35mm film camera are some ... Is the Nikon D3 the best digital SLR Nikon have ever made? Oh yes... By a country mile. But is it better than the 1DS Mk III? You'll have to wait until we test one of those. To my eye it easily beats anything else for image quality and noise but there's the thorny question of the D300 - Nikon may have made that a bit too good. Either way £3,200 is a lot more than a D300 and a lot less than a 1DS Mk III. Read more

I'm a film guy and have stuck it out till the bitter end using my F5....still a great camera. BUT, I know I will be able to get many more shots I never could have with my film camera and it's going to be nice to not have to travel around with a whole brick of film. Digital also allows you to play and experiment with things. Very, very happy with my purchase. Glad Nikon FINALLY came out with a full frame camera. Read more

I love the feeling of a pro Nikon in my hands and after venturing into the digital world with a D200, I was thrilled when I took delivery of my D3. This camera does everything an SLR 35mm should do. It is fast, great autofocus, controls are easily accessable and easily changed. The ISO performance is fantastic and when I do get some noise in my images, I find it much more pleasant than my D200. I can shoot all day long at ISO25 600 when I know that the images will end... An amazing camera this is! The Nikon D3 delivers outstanding image quality. The quality at ISO 3200-6400 absolutely surprised me. Also the handling and operating works smoothly. The AF of the Nikon D3 is very fast and even in low light I haven't experienced any problems focussing. Read more
