Features

Spore Creatures is a story-based game with the player assuming the role of an Oogie. Players are forced to survive in strange islands over the course of 12 levels after being kidnapped by UFOs. The game allows replay mode when it ends. The creature is created and modified in an editor, using points earned to give the creature different body parts and skills. The player is given 20 points at the start with which to build their initial creature. The game allows players to save thirty different creations, including those from other players over a local, peer-to-peer connection. Players can have their creatures interact via the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection. Spore Creatures is one of the few Nintendo DS or Wii games to allow a player to opt out of needing to input Friend Codes (a unique twelve digit friend code that can be exchanged with friends and be used to maintain individual friend lists in each game). The game focuses on survival. A large part of the game involves collecting items, allowing players to earn 60 badges based on game moments and actions, finding food, with mini-games such as cuddling and dancing for friend-making. Side quests and mini-games unlock skills and 280 hidden creature parts, which are given to the player by other friendly creatures. Combat consists of the player initiating the fight with another creature by selecting it to go into a one-on-one combat screen in which the creatures face off against each other.

Like its PC counterpart, gameplay is heavily reliant on menus full of sliders and icons to tinker with your creature's attributes and assets, a natural for the touch-screen of the DS. Though comparatively limited in size, scope and technical oomph, Spore Creatures at lease has the decency to engage you from the outset and remain fun throughout. Read more

The basic gameplay elements from Spore 's creature stage have been expanded upon in Spore Creatures , and if you're looking for more of that, you'll be quite pleased by this attractive little adventure. You can even hop online over Wi-Fi to trade and download creatures from other players for added variety. While it's not without its faults, this relatively short adventure is still worth checking out. Read more

Spore Creatures features a colorful, attractive visual design paired with cute sound effects and a laid-back, spacey soundtrack. It also features some of the PC version's online connectivity, albeit in an extremely stripped-down form. In this case, you can download other players' creatures, which then appear within your own game as you explore. This is a neat addition, though its limited scope doesn't give Spore Creatures much additional replay value. But no matter: On... Read more

September 16, 2008 - The PC version of “Spore” is one of the most unique gameplay experiences created in the last few years. Unfortunately, the possibly of having that same product released for an handheld console was very unlikely; instead, they decided to give us a slightly tuned down version, with this game taking you across one of the phases of the PC version. While its bigger brother takes you across an evolutionary adventure, from a single-celled individual up... Read more
