As always, your first thought should not be what graphic card, but how – and to what –you are going to use your new graphic card. When computing started, the computers just had to handle text – and that in only one color. Then computer games came, then simpler icons and all of a sudden we demanded that our home computer should double as photo editor, game console and video player.
Today graphic cards are almost like computers themselves. They have a processor – or even more than one in some cases – and own memory modules for example. Some even have their own water cooling system! Being so advanced of course has a reason, not only has the card hardware handling of the graphics but also some software applications that amongst others makes the graphic card work with other applications and hardware.
If it is mainly for gaming you want a separate graphic card, the advice is to go for the most powerful one. Perhaps your favorite game does not require the most powerful processor today, but a later version most certainly will. If you can’t afford the top of the line check your game manual for minimum demands. Photo editors do not need to buy the most advanced gaming card, but should look for graphic cards with lots of memory and fast memory handling and interfaces. See the editing software manual for details and buy a lot of RAM memory. TV and video users must make sure that such matters as HD/Full-HD, screen format and so on are handled accordingly to the other devices by the graphic card they choose.
If you choose to install one of the most advanced cards, be sure to check that your power supply can handle it, once they use a lot of power. If you are going to use it as a part of a home movie system be sure that it is not too noisy because some of them, especially the cheaper ones, are. Be sure to check the connection possibilities of the graphic card, you should have both analog and digital connections in order to use it with other devices as TV sets and projectors for example. The more connections the better.
Other features that sometimes come with the graphic card are TV-tuner, Tele-text, functionality and built-in sound card. If you for example have one or more of those functions integrated on your motherboard, the graphic card can not only make the graphics better, it could improve other features/functions of your computer.
After deciding which graphic cards to choose between, read tests of the interesting models. Check your software – and other hardware – manuals to make sure that they will work together.
TIP:
As a lot of new versions of components, soft wares and so on are released over time, log on regularly to the home page of the manufacturer of your graphic card to check for upgrades. That will make your computer work smoother and more efficiently in the long run.
