As always, your first thought should not be what motherboard, but how – and to what –you are going to use your new motherboard. If you just want a basic computer for surfing and such, go for an inexpensive version with some circuits like sound card and/or network connections integrated, but it is often worth choosing one of the well-known brands. If you, on the other hand, want to be able to play computer games, use demanding software like photo/video editing or if you want to have the possibility to upgrade or improve your computer, you have to choose more carefully. Partly because some applications need a lot of computer power and partly because there will always come newer, better and even more demanding applications over time.

The motherboard is undoubtedly the most important component in your computer – the heart - as all other components like memory, hard drive, optic media like DVD burners, communication ports like Ethernet, USB, Bluetooth, Firewire and so on are connected on to the motherboard. It does not matter how good a graphic card or processor you buy is unless the motherboard can handle it.

So all components, for example sound cards, graphic cards, and especially CPUs, you choose for your motherboard must be carefully checked so that they match the motherboard. As the CPU gets very hot cooling fans are important too. If the WiFi-card and other wireless connections are integrated on the board of your choice make sure to what standard it meets, the difference in speed can be substantial.

Motherboards can be divided into three main segments:

• The inexpensive and simple ones. They often come with sound and/or graphic cards integrated which means that they are not easily upgradable – if upgradable at all. They offer basic functionality, often good value for money and are usually easy to install but are of course limited in functions and upgrades.

• The standard ones. Standard may sound a little boring, but the main part of all motherboards are similarly built, but with different performance and capability. Choose the motherboard and components carefully and you could end up with a very good computer for a reasonable price

• The versatile ones. These are the ones for you who want to have the possibility to have the best components at all time, in general almost nothing is integrated, you could often get very high level of flexibility as these cards often offer connections for both newer and older standards and have a large number of connections and slots for components of all kinds.

After deciding which motherboards to choose between, read the tests of interesting models and be sure to check that the motherboard of your choice works together with the other components you have chosen.

TIP:
As a lot of new versions of components, soft wares and so on are released over time, log on regularly to the home page of the manufacturer of your motherboard to check for upgrades. That will make your computer work smoother and more efficiently in the long run.
