Once unpacked, it takes about four hours to charge up your battery. Once charged the system plays for 2-3 hours or so (this seems like a poor energy exchange and the cost of constantly recharging the system is worth considering against the low price point). Nonetheless, while the battery isn’t as long lasting as some higher end systems, you can’t complain when the average price on the Coby TF-DVD8501 is about $120! At that great price, I was surprised to see it come with a complimentary book for mounting it on the driver’s seat, and two headphones. Note however that some consumers report car performance isn’t always great, and the car adapters seem to be undependable and the sound system isn’t the highest quality. This may be a huge drawback from people who really want portability and quality viewing in a variety of situations, or those that want a truly flexible system on which to play music.
Additionally for families with younger children, the case on the Coby portable DVD player isn’t the sturdiest I’ve seen. It won’t take a lot of abuse. However, if you’re thinking of just enjoying movies in the hammock, at lunch time, or in bed – this is a great system at a price you can really afford. Finally, before buying, read over the materials that come with the DVD player and make sure it will function with the regional disks you use (there are limitations despite advertising that implies otherwise).

The controls are easy to use, I taught him how to work it when he was 4 and he never had a problem with it. The sound is good and the swivel feature gives you options to attach it to the back of a seat so it can be off the lap. The picture quality is really good, adequate for a coby. I wouldn't... So I bought this player hoping for a compact, easy to use durable little "tv" that my 2 year old could watch in the car, and be content. Ya know, just him and Dora the Explorer. Sadly all he gets to do stress over having to wait for the stupid thing to work..."mommy...tv...not work!" It worked great the first five to ten times watching a dvd and then it went to poo. It started doing weird things, player wouldn't power on, brand new dvd's were skipping, there was a big... Read more
